Thinking about becoming a member? frequently asked questions

What happens at Camera Club meetings?

We have a varied program for the season catering for people of all abilities, from a first time camera user to an experienced hobbyist. Club nights include guest speakers, practical nights, discussions and competition nights where feedback is provided on members photos.  Members have numerous opportunities to show and talk about their own work throughout the year. An important part of our meetings is the tea break, giving the chance to get to know and chat with our members.  See our syllabus for 2024/5 here

Where and when do club meetings take place?

Meetings are on Monday evenings from September to May (See syllabus page). Meetings start at 7 pm, the speakers starting at 7.15 promptly. We aim to finish the meetings by 9 pm.  We broadcast our meetings by Zoom for members who are unable to attend in person.

Our address is: Bingley Methodist Church Herbert Street Bingley BD16 4JU

Can I come to a meeting without joining the club?

We welcome people trying out a couple of meetings before joining. So we can make sure to introduce you to someone on the committee, please get in contact with our club secretary ahead of the meeting. bingcamsec@hotmail.co.uk

What else happens apart from the weekly meetings?

The club is active throughout the year, and members can get involved in many activities as well as our meetings. We run additional sessions our members for example Photoshop and Lightroom classes, Studio sessions and occasional club outings and social events.  During the summer we set teams of club members challenges. There are also a number of club interest groups (e.g wildlife, landscape, creative, music photography) who frequently go out and photograph together. The club maintains a members only Whatsapp group and Facebook page for members to chat, share information and learn from each other outside meetings. We strive to make sure that all our activities are open to all members and encourage our members to organise activities that other club members can join.

I am a complete beginner, would I be welcome?

Certainly. We always like to meet new photographers who share our enthusiasm. We're actively looking for new members and it doesn't matter what level of experience you have, we aim for the club to help you develop. If you are interested in awards, we have a set of trophies for newcomers (members in their first two years of membership), so you will be competing with people of similar experience.

Do I need expensive equipment?

Definitely not, the person taking the photo is most important. Our members use all types of cameras including mobile phones.

Do I have to enter competitions?

No you do not. We recommend using the competitions as a way to develop your skills as a photographer. The feedback given can go a long way to help improve you photography.  Details of our competitions in 2024/5 are here

How much does it cost to become a member?

Our annual subscription is £44. For students under 21 in full time education the subscription is £10.  This is great value for money, especially with the archive of historical meeting recordings.
