A Brilliant Start to the Season with Lizzie Shepherd
On Monday 15th September, Bingley Camera Club opened its new season in the best possible way: with a visit from the highly regarded landscape photographer Lizzie Shepherd.
Lizzie’s presentation, “Whatever the Weather: Why Seasons Matter,” was nothing short of inspiring. She took us on a journey through the natural world, showing how the shifting seasons, changing light, and unpredictable weather patterns all play a vital role in the art of photography.
Whatever the Weather
Lizzie reminded us that the weather isn’t something to fear — it’s something to embrace. Dramatic storms, misty mornings, heavy snow, or even a dull, grey sky can all bring atmosphere and character to an image. Sometimes, so-called “bad weather” is the best weather for creativity.
The Rhythm of the Seasons
Each season brings its own unique palette, textures, and opportunities:
-
Spring – fresh greens, vibrant energy, and soft blossom light.
-
Summer – long days, strong contrasts, and warm evening tones.
-
Autumn – rich colours, golden light, and moody skies.
-
Winter – snow, frost, stark forms, and a quieter mood.
By revisiting the same locations at different times of year, Lizzie showed how photographers can build a much deeper relationship with the landscape.
Key Takeaways for Photographers
-
Don’t wait for “perfect” conditions — work with whatever nature offers.
-
Look for changes in colour, shape, and texture throughout the year.
-
Pay attention to light direction and quality; subtle differences can transform a scene.
-
Be adaptable and open-minded — a walk in the rain might bring the most memorable shot.
A Fantastic Opening Night
Lizzie’s talk was a perfect way to kick off our year at Bingley Camera Club. Her thoughtful insights, stunning images, and generous advice left everyone feeling motivated to look at familiar landscapes with fresh eyes.
A big thank you to Lizzie for sharing her passion and experience with us. If the rest of the season is half as inspiring as this first evening, we’re in for a real treat.
