Bingley Camera Club meeting 29th September 2025
This weeks meeting saw Bingley Camera Club receive a very engaging presentation by Club Committee member, Clare Smallwood all about the club competitions throughout the season and why entering will develop your photography skills. This was followed by a session on how to critique and image. The club then split into small groups and critiqued amongst themselves and scored them all.
How Camera Club Competitions Can Help You Grow as a Photographer
Picture this: it’s a club night, and your image is about to appear on the big screen. You’ve tweaked it, polished it, maybe even agonised over whether it was “good enough.” Then the judge starts to speak. Suddenly, you’re seeing your own photograph in a new light.
That’s the beauty of camera club competitions. They don’t just test your work – they teach you to see.
-
A new pair of eyes: What you thought was a perfect shot might have a distracting corner, or perhaps the crop isn’t quite right. Things you didn’t notice in the comfort of your own editing chair become glaringly obvious when someone else points them out.
-
Learning through critique: Feedback, when taken with an open mind, is gold dust. A judge’s comments can feel sharp at first, but behind them is a chance to improve. Every suggestion is like a stepping stone, nudging you forward in both technical skill and artistic vision.
-
Stretching your creativity: Competitions often come with themes or challenges. These little nudges can push you outside your comfort zone – making you try new techniques, explore different subjects, or take risks you wouldn’t otherwise consider.
And yes, there’s the thrill of hearing praise, or even seeing your image take a ribbon. But the real prize is subtler: it’s the moment you look back at your older work and realise how far you’ve come.
Camera club competitions aren’t just about winning. They’re about listening, learning, and seeing your own photography evolve – one image at a time.
