Spotlight on Lizzie Coombes: A Photographer's Journey of Community Engagement and Creative Collaboration

In the bustling city of Leeds, England, a visionary photographer by the name of Lizzie Coombes, known as Betty Lawless in the digital realm, has been making waves with her innovative approach to photography and community engagement. With a background rooted in art and influenced by iconic photographers such as August Sander, Diane Arbus, and Martin Parr, Lizzie's work transcends traditional boundaries, weaving together elements of social documentary, portrait photography, and collaborative projects.

A Fusion of Art and Advocacy

Lizzie's journey into photography was not merely a pursuit of artistic expression but a quest to effect social change. Drawing inspiration from her experiences working in hostels and homeless shelters, she initiated projects like "School Photo with a Difference," aimed at empowering school children through creativity and self-expression. Using photography as a tool for education and community building, she collaborated with schools to develop resource packs and foster self-esteem among students.

Capturing the Essence of Community

One of Lizzie's most notable endeavours was her commission to photograph 500 individuals for the 50th anniversary of the Leeds Carnival. With a keen eye for diversity and inclusion, she set up pop-up studios in unconventional locations, from empty shop units to community swimming pools, making portrait photography accessible to all. Her work not only celebrates the vibrancy of her community but also amplifies voices that often go unheard.

Exploration and Innovation

Lizzie's creative process is as dynamic as her portfolio. From setting up portrait studios in shop windows to capturing underwater portraits in community pools, she continually pushes the boundaries of traditional photography. Her emphasis on spontaneity and genuine interactions ensures that her subjects feel at ease, resulting in authentic moments frozen in time.

Overcoming Challenges, Making an Impact

Despite the challenges of securing funding and navigating the intricacies of project management, Lizzie remains steadfast in her commitment to using photography as a catalyst for change. Projects like the Meanwood Road Project, an ongoing documentation of her bustling neighbourhood, exemplify her dedication to community engagement and social impact. Through pop-up portrait studios and outdoor art galleries, she fosters a sense of belonging and connection among residents, transforming mundane streets into vibrant expressions of communal identity.

A Vision for the Future

As Lizzie continues to chart new territories in the realm of photography, her work serves as a testament to the transformative power of art and advocacy. With exhibitions at prestigious venues and features in prominent media outlets, her influence continues to grow, inspiring others to use their creativity as a force for positive change. With each click of her camera shutter, Lizzie Coombes redefines the boundaries of photography, proving that art has the power to transcend barriers and unite communities in shared expression.
